2020 update

I hope all of you reading this are safe and well, and your families and friends also. My hopes for good health and recovery are with you and others, and thoughts of sympathy for those we have lost, whether we knew them or not, as we move through these times.

I am currently teaching my usual Princeton Adult School Drawing class virtually on Zoom.

Teaching this way is good experience, and I am glad to see that people are learning the material and that their drawing is improving as usual. I am finding that there are some added benefits to the format, which balance other changes.

I now am also offering private LESSONS and consultations on Zoom, as well as working on developing my other usual options for lesson topics and small group CLASSES.

With the current increase in COVID-19 cases in NJ, this is the best current option. As things improve I will also be offering private lessons in person again.

For some this has been a good time to focus on creative work and on making time to develop artistic skills.

I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Drawing and More

My next Drawing Class at Princeton Adult School begins Tuesday January 12. – It is a 10 week class, which meets from 7 – 9:30 pm.
(For more information, see the Visual and Creative Arts section on the PAS website:   http://www.ssreg.com/princeton/classes/classes.asp?catID=3682 )
I am also teaching individual and small group Art Lessons, and enjoy working with students at all levels and with many interests.
My aim is to provide a supportive and encouraging environment, and instruction in a variety of art subjects according to your goals.
I offer flexibly scheduled lessons or consultations, and will also have Studio Classes starting later in 2019.
2018 was a busy year. Besides many events, both ongoing and unexpected, and both family and employment commitments, there were some highlights in my artistic life:
Early in the year I had a solo show, titled “THROUGH”, which was held at the Nassau Presbyterian Church in Princeton NJ.
I was honored to among artists from this area who were selected for the Summer 2018 Creative Capital Program.
This program features a variety of professional development worships and opportunities, and is a great way to connect with other artists, as well as to lean from the excellent program presenters and workshop leaders. It is supported in part by the Dodge foundation. Although this was  a summer program, the connections and opportunities are ongoing.
One of the beauties of the program is the way the planning workshops include one’s whole life, rather than compartmentalizing one’s creative activity. What I am learning from this will help in my teaching, as well as in my creative work.
I wish you a happy, safe, and healthy year in 2019!

First Teaching

My first teaching experience was in Boston, just after my BFA, and before graduate school.

The young son of our friends (who also were our landlords) loved to draw, but there was some worry about his art class in school. I gave him lessons at his home (an easy commute, 2 floors down). This was before I started many of the things I now teach, but I hope the experience was encouraging for him. What I mainly remember was how he loved to draw action scenes with planes, and make “movie music” as he drew.

While this wasn’t what you might recognize as realism, the activity and process seem very contemporary to me, as an artistic activity. The drawing was a record of the storytelling, rather than the goal. I recently saw a friend, a recent art graduate, in a joint performance with a dancer, sharing and combining the processes of dance and drawing.

When I teach, I still try to listen, and look, to find out what my students/artists are doing and trying to do. I have ways to teach how to do representational work, how to understand color or design, but these are part of a bigger picture, of what art is and how it is part of our lives.
